Ebola: Checkout Book Program

While Ebola closed all schools, a volunteer-operated checkout book program provided study and assignments at Bumpe High School.

Challenge:

  • Students were shut out of schools for over eight months during the 2014-'15 ebola epidemic in West Africa.
  • Formal teaching was at a halt, students were unable to access school facilities or equipment and were liable to misbehavior; all were losing some of their educational progress.

Solution:

  • Textbook loan program; students check-out and or check-in books daily.
  • Books issued by volunteers with assignments on self study and learning objectives.

Impact:

  • Motivated students were able to sustain progress in multiple subjects.
  • Some less independent students were distracted from unproductive non-educational activities.
